Let us discern for ourselves
   what is right;
let us learn together
   what is good.

The heart of the discerning
   acquires knowledge;
the ears of the wise
   seek it out.

Yearning For God
by Todd S. Greene
(Spring 1987)

God is what God is.
And God has done what God has done.
There is nothing
that you or I or anyone can do to change that.
God works in our world,
in our universe.
What has God done?
How did God do it?
God gave us brains.
God gave us consciousness.
We must use these gifts
and use them wisely,
or we abdicate a God-given responsibility.
That responsibility entails being intellectually honest.
We need to adhere to intellectual honesty
so we can
effectively learn about our world
and
effectively learn about God.
Our universe is connected with God.
Either
God made our universe
or
our universe is a part of God
like a cell of your body is a part of you.
Learning about our universe
leads to
learning about God,
because
our universe was made by God
or because
our universe is God.
If a person rejects the use of
the methods of intellectual honesty,
she or he loses
the ability to effectively learn about our universe.
And the person who cannot effectively learn about our universe
cannot grow
in knowledge about God.
Knowledge and wisdom lead to discernment.
Discernment
at its finest level
leads to
divine understanding.
